BASIC/DEFAULT BIOGRAPHY

Born on June 1, 2233, Dr. Carol Marcus is the youngest and one of the most prominent molecular biologist in employment of the Federation. She is the inventor and main researcher of the Genesis project.

Carol was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Lieutenant Madeline Shermann-Marcus, a science officer aboard the U.S.S. Wilson, and Jeffrey Marcus, a high school biology teacher. She inherited her love for science from both of her parents, and this love was one that she continued to bear throughout college and onwards.

On October 27, 2245, Carol's mother died while on an away mission. The loss was a blow to Jeffrey and Carol, and for a time it was difficult for the two of them to be around each other without the gaping absence of Madeline being evident. To try to help with this problem, Carol moved in with her maternal aunt and her family for about a year or so, returning to her father's house in 2247.

Having inherited and further honed a wealth of knowledge in science, Carol was accepted early into a university in Iowa. She began school in August of 2250, focusing in molecular biology. She participated in an accelerated program that would allow her to graduate with a Ph.D. in 6-7 years instead of the usual 8.

When Carol was in her early twenties, she met and had a relationship with James Tiberius "Jim" Kirk, the now-famous Captain. Although she deeply cared for Jim, she was still cautious of his reckless behavior, and so when she discovered that she was pregnant she left him, wanting the baby to be raised in a healthy environment she felt she could not have with Jim at that point in time. Their son, David James Marcus, was born on September 3, 2255. Carol took the first semester off from her schooling in order to raise her son better, but when the spring semester came around she re-enrolled. Thankfully, she was well-supported by her friends and the faculty, and so she was able to manage being a single mother and still in school well enough.

The previous year, Carol developed an idea that would eventually become Project Genesis for her senior thesis. She would continue to work on it all throughout her doctorate studies. The project eventually garnered the attention of Federation scientists, and when she earned her Ph.D and submitted her official proposal to study the project, it was quickly accepted, and she began work in earnest in 2257.

From then until the Narada Incident in 2258 Carol's life was a balancing act between raising David and Project Genesis, although the former was greatly aided by her ability to use the daycare center provided for Federation scientists while she was researching. In spite of how busy she found herself at times, she was content with her work.

In the aftermath of the Narada, however, she was faced with a decision. Captain James T. Kirk seemed to finally be mature enough to handle the knowledge that he has a son, but Carol was unsure if he would be willing to reopen communications with her after the way things had ended between them. Additionally, she herself was a little hesitant about speaking to him again, as she was unsure if she still had feelings for him, and recreating whatever relationship needed to allow David into his life may have dug up old wounds. Because of this and because of the fact that her messaging would not have been well-accepted so soon after his rise to fame, Carol chose not to tell Jim at the time.

However, it is now around two years after Jim was given his captaincy, and Carol has been scheduled to ride aboard the Enterprise to go to and from research sites for Genesis. Now, it seems that her choice to tell Jim of David may be made for her, and she fears for what may happen after.

SUPPLEMENTARY BIOGRAPHY: FALL FROM EDEN 'VERSE
It is 2261, and the crew of the Enterprise are some two years into their five year mission. By chance, Dr. Carol Marcus needs to hitch a ride on the Enterprise in order to get to a planet for some research that will greatly help forward the Genesis Project.

Years before, in early 2253, Carol Marcus met Jim Kirk for the first time in an antique bookstore in Iowa. Kirk attempted to flirt, much to Carol's exasperation and amusement, and eventually she conceded to meeting him later that day for a drink. The two hit off, and slowly their on-again off-again relationship began to develop into something serious. Jim officially asked Carol to go steady with him in December of 2253, and the two remained together for the next year.

Then, in March of 2255, Carol Marcus ended their relationship, citing various and somewhat vague reasons why they could not continue being together. Unbeknownst to Kirk, she was about 3 months pregnant with their son. Now, Carol's parents had married solely because Madeline was pregnant with Carol, and Carol had witnessed how poisonous their relationship eventually became. Because of this and also because she was uncertain of what effect Kirk's then-reckless and self-destructive behavior would have on their child, Carol felt it was for the best that she raise the child on her own, cutting out Kirk completely from both of their lives.

Carol and Jim's son, David James Marcus, was born on September 5, 2255, at the beginning of what should have been the first semester of Carol's first year of doctorate studies. Instead, Carol took that semester off, devoting the time to caring for her son with the aid of her widowed maternal grandmother, Mackenzie Shermann. When the spring semester of that same school year began, Carol re-enrolled in, entrusting the care of her son to her grandmother during the hours when she was in her classes.

Throughout her studies, Carol continued to study the concept behind the Genesis Project that she had begun for her senior year thesis, garnering the attention of the big science names of the Federation. In the meantime, Jim Kirk was whizzing through command training at Starfleet Academy, a fact which Carol learned about via her late mother's connections to Starfleet two years after she and Kirk had separated. The news comforted the young mother, who was pleased to know that Jim had gone on to fulfill his potential after their rather messy breakup.

Carol worked to find the equilibrium between her studies and her son, and despite taking time off that first semester she nonetheless managed to earn her doctorate at age 24 in 2257, at which point she was immediately hired by the Federation to begin official work on the Genesis Project. She and David moved to the research facility based in Barstow, California. The region was located in the Mojave Desert region, and provided good testing opportunities for the Genesis Project.

Aside from the information that he had enrolled in Starfleet Academy, Carol neither heard nor saw much about Jim Kirk until 2258, when Nero attacked and destroyed Vulcan and attempted to destroy Earth. With an almost unreasonable amount of pride, Carol watched on the newsfeeds as the father of her child was promoted from cadet to captain immediately after the disaster. It was then that Carol began to seriously consider informing Kirk of the son they had together, but, fearing that her attempts to contact him would be seen as her seeking to use his newfound fame, she decided against it until a later time.

Eventually the decision as to whether or not she should inform Kirk of David was made for her when she needed to ride aboard the Enterprise in order to get to a planet that held information that could potentially greatly benefit Genesis. It was almost impossible for Jim and Carol not to interact, and during one of their conversations, David came up and Carol confessed to Jim that he was David's father.

The confession quickly led to an argument between the two, but in the end the argument was resolved and they agreed to trying to have a more civil conversation later in the day over drinks. At that point, Carol showed Jim a picture of David and Jim, seeing the strong physical resemblance between him and the boy, realized that David truly was his son, although Carol still agreed to submit a DNA sample for a paternity test that would prove the truth once and for all. Afterwards, Carol returned to her quarters to plan what she would tell David in their upcoming video call, while Kirk sought the assistance of his best friend and CMO, Leonard McCoy.

Now, Carol is about to inform her son about the identity of his father. Although she has told David over the years small details about his father and their relationship- that his father was a starship captain, and that she and his father had not seen each other for months prior to David's birth, thus causing him not to be aware of David's existence- but she had not told him yet his father's name, and she is nervous to discover what the reaction of her son will be to learning that his father is a Federation hero.
